  • Self-care

What are some of the things you do for self-care? Before I worked, I did a lot of things..spending time at iMSN, sewing, scrap booking .... now I find I'm not doing anything. I'll be going to 3 days/week soon and I'd like to do a better job of taking care of myself. So what do you do?

This reminds me of this article I read yesterday. http://www.brucethao.com/blog/self-care-is-a-lie

I feel like the best self-care I do is letting go of unnecessary obligations. I can't do it all, and not feeling like I have to, is a huge load off and makes it more tolerable to do everything I do do. If that makes sense.

But I also see the need to make more time for the stuff I enjoy, as a form of boundary setting. (Convincing myself I deserve to do something that's just for me is a real challenge!)

I work on crossword puzzles in the evening, for a while I was able to read for pleasure, and I've finally gotten back to spinning and knitting. It feels good to say, "I'm GOING to spin for at LEAST the next 30 minutes," and just relax instead of worrying about what else I SHOULD be doing.

Gardening is a mix of obligation and enjoyment for me, so I have to make sure to assign time for puttering in my decorative beds (which is mostly me-time) vs. being productive in my veggie garden.

My horse, gym, I walk a four mile loop of hills around my house, listening to music.

Dessert after I put the kids to bed every night.
Texting constantly with some good friends

Biggest for me is exercise. I need it. I crave it. I must run. Running for me is a far cry from the old me (I'm slower, I pee myself, and I have to push a big ok stroller) but literally the memory of loving to run has carried me the last 6 years since I had kids.

Someday I will run another race, fast and well trained.

Oh I need some self care badly. I used to be much much better about self care.

What I do currently is walking: sometimes long, sometimes short, sometimes fast and sometimes leisurely, sometimes around the block and sometimes in a park, fresh air saves my soul.

Does eating frozen yogurt and watching the Real Housewives count? I'm not really in a place where I can do much self-care with a newborn + my older boys. I'm hoping to do more for myself once the boys are both in school next fall. I'd love to start going to the gym again, and I dream about relaxing in the pool all by myself.

You're where I was this time last year. Newborn + two older kids. I was home with all 3 alone all summer (first time that I'd ever been off with everyone for more than a week or two). It was tough but we kept busy and survived. The biggest challenge was the HEAT with the newborn but you just steel yourself to sweat and you'll be fine. The fall was GLORIOUS when they were both in preschool. Due to working PT, I have some funky days (T/TH I have D and R, W just R which is the best thing ever, and F I have C and R). It's actually a great schedule because each girl gets at least one "special day" with me (with their little brother) and I get Wednesdays to run errands and just be with R. Due to my own stupidity at not just sending C to public school, next year I will have NO days with D alone and no days with R alone. :/ I'm thinking it's going to be an adjustment.

I crochet. And go wander the aisles of Target, Tuesday Morning, etc., and moms night out almost monthly with the moms in the homeschool group.

I came a me across this recently. Most of you don't follow this blogger, but the overall message is relevant. http://www.carrotsformichaelmas.com/...led-self-care/
