You know it is funny, I thought about posting this topic on a different board. Here is what fitbit says, though I think I am awake for longer than it says I am. I try to get in bed around 9 and read. Sometimes I have to adjust fitbit because it says I was asleep when I wasn't. Hubby comes to bed between 9 and 10. I get up a lot and move to the couch because I'm sweating and awake. I never use an alarm. I'm always awake. Here are my sleeping habits:

    Jan 24
    9:31-4:34
    2 times awake
    9 times restless ( 20 min awake)

I used to be a mild to moderate insomniac, mostly for the same reasons Houseelf mentioned - reading, brain spinning away, enjoying the productivity of silence & solitude... Now I'm constantly so exhausted that I fall asleep in 10 minutes or less. I sleep from about 10:30/11-6 most nights. I could still sleep in until 8 or 9 if DD let me, but she's up by 7 at the latest. I miss my late nights of reading and writing, but I'm just too tired right now.

It's a huge priority right now: having said that, we are moving into Kid #3 TTC phase, so clearly I just lied or am delusional. 😅

Yes it is amazing how you can train yourself! Hubby can sleep anywhere, anytime and I'm so jealous. But, when I was flying for work every week I miraculously trained myself to sleep on the plane Monday mornings. Hoping it will work out similarly with "sleeping when the baby sleeps" and I'll get the hang of it after a few weeks.

It should be noted I'm writing this at 3:12 am with a 7 am alarm.

I enjoy the solitude of night: Reading for hours, screwing around on my phone, etc. it is also a time when I get "monkey mind" and can't turn it off. Finally (spoiler alert), remember those sleepless infant nights? Fast forward a few years. Teens up in the kitchen late at night, making noise in the basement with their friends, or worse yet...driving in a car doing teenager things. 😳 So not conducive to sleep.

I swear I get several nights of "short sleep" and then I sleep binge. Apparently that's bad. I consider my habits fairly healthful overall. Sleep is a particular low point.

How is your sleep? What tips do you have? I'm open to suggestions.
When I am not too busy, I listen to 20 minutes of instrumental music or nature sounds, followed by a 10 minute soak in the tub before going to bed. But sometimes even that doesn't provide a restful night's sleep if there is too much work stuff to think about. On the nights when it doesn't work I usually sleep much better the next night. In general I can't expect much better when my Fitbit says I'm getting 6.5 hours a night, and I don't trust myself to make very many important decisions after a night when it drops below 5 hours.

I try to get to bet around 10 or 11, then set the alarm at 6 so I get 7-8 hours of sleep.

I've been diagnosed with DSPD, which sucks. But then there are sleeping pills, which are excellent.

Thanks! Although I'd never advocate relying on sleeping pills, they work extremely well for me. I've got the kind of career where don't have to be at work early every day, which allows me to only use them a few times per week maximum, thus enabling me to avoid dependency and developing tolerance.

Like others, sleep is a huge component to my self care. I need sleep -- a minimum of 6 hours but 7+ is my sweet spot. I don't function well without sleep and I feel crappy if I go more than two days with limited sleep. It eventually feels like the aches associated with the flu if I am sleep deprived.

I go to bed fairly early (usually before 10 but not always) and around the same time each night. I read for at least 15 minutes on my paperwhite kindle which doesn't seem to keep me up despite being a screen. Reading helps me unplug from all the stuff that happened during the day. DH and I rarely watch TV (except sports) and NEVER in our bedroom no matter what time it is. We use a white noise machine at night and this helps as well. When DH is on call and he even thinks he might be paged late at night, I sleep in the extra bedroom. I love this. He likes it less.

I've never been a night owl or "perk up" at night. I'm a morning person instead. That's just how I am wired. I went years not sleeping well when my kids were little and it didn't go well. It's a huge priority for me now. I'm a good sleeper. When we vacation al bets are off. Sometimes I sleep well, sometimes I don't.

Getting enough sleep and rest are my problems these days due to hectic schedules.
