  • 2016 olympics

This is setting up to be a disaster. Can they cancel at this late date? If I were a swimmer or yachter I would seriously consider pulling out. And the financial issues in Brazil seem so horrific that I wouldn't trust security worth a damn. With all the other stuff going on globally, an Olympian Fail will not help.

Brazil is pretty shaky right now. Reading about the poor people of Venezuela ranks right up there.

Totally agree, @fluffhead. I was expressing that to a friend who was trying to get to the Olympic Time Trials a few years ago and she looked at my like I was crazy. Between sanitation issues, political crisis, Zika, and the current financial cluster make it seem way too chaotic to risk. Then again I'm not an Olympian and have no clue what it's like to train my entire life for something. Ugh. What a mess.

ETA: And it seems inappropriate and irresponsible to just go in there to send Rio into more chaos and then pull out after the games are over... What good will that do?

Brazil will never recover from the financial disaster either way.

I know several of the US sailors personally. It's a disaster. But the problem is, you peak and fundraise with a date in mind. They can't back out now or they almost certainly miss their chance.

We know a bunch of people who will be competing. None of them are talking about not going.

Yeah they're in such an incredibly tough position!

Yeah, my current thinking is that they'll pull out all the stops for the games, and consequently they'll go really well, but it's going to be disastrous in the long run.

It's really very sad. When I was in Brazil everyone was so optimistic about the future.

There's an article in today's ny times about it. An excerpt about why zika might not be such a concern (taken out of context, admittedly...):
According to one calculation, in Rio a woman is more than 10 times more likely to be raped than catch Zika. (Men are more likely to be shot to death.)
