The race I'm going to sign up for has several trail bits, and some steep bits (there's a .4 mile Strava segment on the route that averages 5.6%). I'm currently doing two shorter and one longer run per week, ramping up to where I'm now at a total of 15 miles. It's a nice comfortable starting point. Fortunately since the route is so close, I can practice parts of it. The start/finish is about a mile from my house, and the furthest point is 5 miles away. I had a good effort today, 7 minutes at an average HR over 180. Getting stronger. I figure I'll start a 12 week training plan near the end of this month (the race is in August).

That sounds great! I bet it's a nice course too. I've never done a trail race at all but it's on my bucket list.

Yeah, it should take in some of the best views of my extremely beautiful local area. (Yes I'm biased, LOL.) Messing around on the route map, it looks like about 2 miles of straight-up dirt trail, another mile of poor dirt roads, a mile or two of chipsealed trail and multiuse path, and the rest on roads. Should be interesting! I'm kind of excited that I can warm up by running to the start, and not have to worry about parking, LOL.

Admittedly I'm still not sure I won't just do the 10k. It also has about a 1.25 mile stretch of trail, and the steep hill, but other than that the route is much simpler. And the training is much less time consuming!

I think I'm going to do it! Goal would just be to finish. If I can fit in 3-4 running days and 2-3 yoga days/wk, I think I'll be good to go! In the process of roping a lapsed running buddy in with me, too. She found a 20-wk training plan that looks nice and slow, so I have until the end of May to fight through those crappy 3 milers.

TulipsAndSunscreen Some scientist just came out with an algorythm of how much runners slow down over time. It's depressing. I literally have watched my times slide backwards through pace groups over the years. I guess that is part of the process though. It's a big slice of humble pie. My NYC time was soul crushing. Still, the silver lining is that SEVEN eighty year olds finished Boston last month. I mean, how cool is that? I'm having got change my thought process about running to stay in the game.

RE: Speedwork. YES! but also....NO! It really is the key to good times. Nonetheless, speed work IMHO is much more injury provoking than an LSD. When you're trying to stay in a sport over the long haul, you may need to start thinking about staying healthy more than decreasing times. YMMV.
In my dreams I run with the Kenyans.

Well I think the stroller has artificially slowed me down. Mid 30s is the time that some people run their fastest. But I agree that speed work needs to be controlled to avoid injury.

Yay R&D!!!

I took last week and this week off from the run: I'm using new inserts to see how they work, and the podiatrist told me he thought it was overuse.
