Our steam line froze last winter with the extreme cold and had water spraying all over the laundry room when it thawed. Not an issue I expected with a dryer either! We never reconnected it.

^I remember that Angie!

What about steam features on washers? I didn't know this was a thing. I am really bad at leaving a washed load in too long and then having to rewash it...

Our washer has a steam feature. It's called 'sanitize'. I've only used it once or twice on some super nasty dog towels. Worked fine.

I ended up ordering these. The washer and dryer both have steam features and they ended up being only $50 more than the Duet. Hopefully it lives up to the reviews

@Pollyanna, I was drooling over the Maytags. SO BIG. But it was a little more than I wanted to spend. Definitely a good option, though.

I am piggybacking on this. Our new apartment is awesome, but the laundry situation is not. The w/d is in the basement. As I opened the storm door, the (very steep) concrete steps were COVERED with spiders and camel crickets. We originally toured in February and I guess the bugs were somewhere warmer? Anyway, I couldn't bring myself to go down the steps so hit the laundromat instead.

I'll speak with the landlord about pest control (not sure how much he can do about it, though), but I'm considering a combo w/d that could hook up to our sink. The loads are relatively small, but it would be in-unit and spider free. Do any of you have experiences with them?

Eek! I wouldn't have been able to go down there either! I hope they are able to get rid of them.

Eww. I hope some pest control will clear up the creepy basement. I don't know of anyone who had a dual washer/dryer. I knew of someone with a stand alone washer that was hooked up to a sink. It was small but worked fine and she hung up her clothes to dry.

I remember using one in an apartment we were staying at in Paris--but that was 2008, so I don't remember much. It was really small.

I had two friends that bought them and had the store sneak them into their nyc apartments (it was actually very funny - the store put them in like furniture boxes when bringing them into the building). From what I remember, they don't work great.

How long do you plan on living there? I'm not sure it's really worth the investment. I would honestly see if you can find a wash and fold service. Depending on where you are in the country, that shouldn't be that expensive.

Hopefully we'll be here through the remainder of school (so, 3-4 years). We may add a kid in an some point, but I figure we could survive with us and a kid up to 2ish. So far the cheapest wash/fold I've found is $1.50/lb. There was a $0.95/lb place in our old city. There are a few wash/fold delivery services that could be between $40 and $50/mth. It would be soooooooo convenient and I would love it, though that seems like a ton of money to spend during training on something I could do myself. Landlord is supposed to swing by today to check out the fridge, so I will ask about the bug situation. I have a feeling he'll tell me to suck it up. It is summer in NC, after all. Bugs galore!

Welp, landlord said the camel crickets are not harmful, so he won't be spraying. I understand, though I will not be using the basement laundry option until they're hibernating. Laundromat for me! I may try to make it a weekend ritual...Get a fun coffee, grab a book, and go sit tight for a couple hours. There are worse things in life, I suppose.

That's somewhat flawed logic... The presence of one insect is bound to attract other bugs or arachnids that prey on it.
Your landlord isn't all that bright. :/

P.S. Is a camel cricket the same thing as a Jerusalem cricket? (Barf!)

Thirteen, no clue on relation and I refuse to do anymore researching since it tends to lead to photos. He said that camel crickets actually eat other bugs (especially dead bugs), so they serve a purpose. He also said one has never jumped on him, but I am not taking my chances. There were also other spiders on the steps, so I'd just rather not go down there. Hopefully it is better once the weather cools off. He is having our kitchen painted tomorrow, replacing a window in the bathroom, and agreed to paint the front porch eventually, so I am hopeful he'll remain receptive to feedback otherwise.

Related: I've decided my laundry coffee will be the Starbucks S'more Frappuccino. Those things are DELICIOUS and will be great for staying cool in the humid laundromat.

I think they're what we call "Sprickets" or spider-crickets. They look like spiders at first glance, but then they leap high and at your face. Awful, evil creatures.
