  • Mojo needed

I just got a call from our sitter, J. Her roommate, D, had dialysis for the first time today, and her body is not reacting well. The third roommate is home with D, but stressed about how to handle her in such a fragile state (J has a final exam). If you could just keep these three in your thoughts and prayers.

Thanks! J is headed back to the apartment (and is very capable/level headed). I'm heading to bed and will get an update in the morning, hopefully. I just hope D steadily improves.

D is doing better this morning. She is cautiously going to her final exam today. I can't even imagine

Yikes. So, D has no familial support during all of this, and our sitter is really feeling the weight of being there for D. She admitted to me today that she is going to try and get counseling so she can continue to be a support to D. Drs have recently mostly concluded that D has a rare form of MD (D is refusing the genetic/conclusive testing). Doctors told her this weekend that she probably won't make it to her mid-twenties (she's just shy of 21). Her heart is too weak to take intense dialysis, but they are not able to let her do at-home dialysis just yet. Her kidneys are basically shot, but because she's so sick, she would not be a candidate for a replacement. Her heart is also really weak - she can't really eat because it's physically too strenuous. There is also a lot of underlying pride issues that is making her difficult and hindering her recovery (she refuses to try and get rides to finals even though she can't really walk/is a fall risk, refuses to get Medicaid, etc).

The kicker? She's so hell-bent on doing things she's been told she can't, that she's continuing with her plan to take the MCAT this spring and apply to med school :thud: Out sitter hasn't had the "you only have a few years to live, don't waste it studying" talk with her. At this point, it's not worth it, though, because the kidney issues is causing memory issues, so people are pretty confident that D won't do well anyway.

My heart breaks for our sitter who knows enough medicine to know her roommate is dying. It breaks for D and her whole situation. It's just all so sad.

What a tragedy. Your sitter is obviously a special person - but they are going to need help. Is there a social worker at the hospital that could step in?

This is horrible. This girl needs Hospice assistance. There's just no way one person can help care for her all alone. loads of prayers.

This is what I was thinking.
There are certain conversations that need to be had with licensed, Cain professionals who see this kind of thing.
Your sitter can still be a pillar of emotional support, but it sounds like her roommate needs a whole team of people who are trained for this.
